Tinta China Collective

About

In the Spanish-speaking world, the prevailing perception is that China is a foreign actor — even an untrustworthy one. China is seen as the region’s antipode, not just geographically but linguistically: we are separated by the world’s largest ocean, the Pacific, and by a sea of ideograms in which our meager alphabet seems adrift. Hence the Spanish expression «está en chino» ("it's in Chinese") is often used to describe anything we find incomprehensible. Yet this perception is a poor compass for understanding the ties between China and those of us who call Spanish home.

At Tinta China, we seek to understand whether China really is as foreign to us as it seems, or whether a series of historical and cultural circumstances have led us to see it that way. We are a research collective that combines qualitative and quantitative analysis to understand what we think about China, and why. Everything we publish is grounded in archival work and rigorous research across multiple datasets.

Our hypothesis is that the Spanish-speaking world, and Latin America in particular, keeps an intimate distance from China. We launched Tinta China to put that hypothesis to the test. Join us as we follow the evidence.
